Reauthoring Masculinity
A psychotherapy group for trans men and transmasculine people.
This group is intended to help trans men and transmasculine people relate to themselves and others more authentically, and to deepen their experience of vulnerability, intimacy, and closeness with each other.
The group’s underlying principles are that each of us gets to author our own narrative, and it is possible to be a man with a thoughtful and healthy relationship with one’s masculinity.

They/Them
Em is an IHI Staff Therapist and one of the facilitators for the Reauthoring Masculinity group therapy program. Em is an eclectic psychotherapist who is passionate about applying interventions and strategies in a proactively collaborative way, often pulling from modalities including psychodynamic theory, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), trauma-informed affirmative care, and mindfulness techniques with an emphasis on the mind-body connection. Em is animated about practicing as a group therapist, as group therapy can be a profound method for clients to connect with peers, to grow their self-knowledge, and to apply relational-emotional values, such as compassion and self-advocacy. Em’s group facilitation style, similar to individual therapy, is rooted in a person-centered approach that emphasizes collaboration, feedback, and collective growth. Frequently Asked Questions
How does this group define masculinity?
We define it together.
Masculinity looks different for each of us and is vast in its potential for gender identity and expression. We invite all forms of masculinity, including those that are uncertain of the place of masculinity within these forms, and we explore and celebrate the diversity within our group.
Can this group help me build community?
This group is a great space to build community.
Group therapy is a powerful psychotherapeutic space for practicing mutuality, solidarity, and conflict resolution skills. Group members are passionate about providing support, sharing resources, and promoting acceptance and belongingness. We abide by privacy and confidentiality policies as a group therapy space, which means all information shared and discussed together remains within the bounds of the group therapy space. This helps to reinforce the group’s commitment to providing an emotionally safe and secure space for processing personal feelings and experiences related to gender, mental health, identity, community, and more.
What are common topics that come up in this group?
Understanding that 82% of transgender individuals have considered suicide, and 40% have attempted to take their own life, topics regarding trans mental health are the core of what we discuss during these group sessions.
Trans men and transmasculine people navigate masculinity in profoundly diverse ways. Accordingly, topics discussed within the Reauthoring Masculinity group therapy program are also very diverse. Common topics include: identity development; gender dysphoria, euphoria, and transition; relationships and family dynamics; experiences of visibility and invisibility; safety and self-advocacy in medical and social settings; and the impact of transphobia, racism, and other intersecting systems of oppression.
Members also often explore issues and feelings related self-esteem, self-acceptance, grief and joy, resilience, and what it means to build affirming community and sustainable care practices in a world that can feel unsafe or invalidating. Members tend to be passionate about activism, social justice, and mutual aid, and these shared values greatly inform the focus of group discussion and of the Reauthoring Masculinity program at large.
