About

IHI Therapy Center (Institute for Human Identity) is an NYC-based non-profit psychotherapy and training center dedicated to fostering personal growth free of traditional gender, sexual orientation, and cultural biases. Our vision is a world where everyone — regardless of their gender identity, sexuality, race, age, disability, or immigration status — can find safety and support through affordable mental health care that is respectful of their needs and experiences.

After leading the successful struggle to have homosexuality removed from the list of mental disorders in 1973, IHI was founded to fill an important need: providing affirmative professional mental health services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

Since then, our practice has continued to embrace a holistic approach to therapy. We recognize that systemic racism and inequality are interconnected, and they have an impact on the lived experiences of both our staff and clients. Because of this, we strive to create a space for constant learning and growth for all who come into our practice.

We are committed to anti-racism. In support of Black Lives Matter and in response to the needs of queer and transgender people of color (QTPOC), IHI has implemented service initiatives such as free 45-minute individual sessions for QTPOC clients. IHI continues to offer ongoing programming, including group therapy, to help QTPOC folks navigate life and healing at the intersection of multiple marginalized identities.

IHI is now conducting therapy sessions via a hybrid model to meet the needs of each client; we are now conducting in-person therapy sessions at our offices as well as sessions via tele-therapy. We are hoping this hybrid model will allow you to access the care you need in a way that is most appropriate for you.
